GEO for SEO & content teams
Write the pages AI cites.
You already know how to rank. GEO adds a second question to every page you publish: will ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI use it as a source? Here is how SEO and content teams find the gaps and fill them.

The shift
Ranking is no longer the whole job
AI answers pick a handful of sources and quote them. A page can rank on Google and never be cited, or sit lower and be the source an engine trusts. The work now covers both.
The good news: your SEO groundwork carries over. Google says the usual SEO best practices still apply to its AI features, and GEO tells you where to point that work next.
What to track
Which pages AI actually cites
Start from the answers, not the keywords. For each buyer question, look at which URLs the engines cite, whether any of them are yours, and which competitor pages they prefer.
- →Your pages cited, per engine and per question
- →Competitor and third-party pages cited instead
- →Questions no page on your site answers well (content gaps)
- →The searches an engine runs behind an answer (query fan-out)
Try the free citation tracker and query fan-out tool to see both on one question.
The plays
How content teams earn citations
AI engines quote pages that answer the question clearly, with facts and sources. These are the plays that turn your content calendar into citations.
Content gaps into briefs
Each question where a competitor is cited becomes a brief. Howseen writes the article from that gap, with a direct answer up top and the facts AI engines tend to quote.
Refresh the pages you have
Rewrite existing pages so AI can read and cite them, instead of creating near-duplicates. See content plan and content refresh.
Search Console & Bing connected
Connect Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools: new articles are submitted for indexing and their indexing is checked.
Technical GEO audit
Check that AI crawlers can reach and read your pages: robots rules, rendering, structured data. Start with the free GEO audit.
Measure
Prove it with citations
Track your questions every 3 days, see which new pages start being cited, and tie them to AI visits in GA4. That gives the content team a feedback loop that rankings alone cannot.
Over a few cycles you learn which formats and topics get cited on which engine, and the content calendar starts to follow the evidence instead of the keyword tool.
Where Howseen fits. Howseen shows which pages each AI engine cites for your buyer questions, turns every gap into an article written to be cited, publishes it to your CMS and checks its indexing. See content autopilot, buyer prompts, integrations and pricing.
The evidence
What the data says for content teams
Each engine picks its sources differently, and Google's AI surfaces still run on indexed pages. That is why GEO starts from SEO and then goes engine by engine.
- →When a Google AI summary appears, users click a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and click a link inside the summary in 1% of visits (Pew Research Center, 900 U.S. adults, 68,879 searches, July 2025).
- →Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: the usual SEO best practices apply and a page must be indexed to be shown as a supporting link (Google Search Central).
- →In our study of 5,331 AI answers to 378 buyer questions (August 16 to October 4, 2026), YouTube is cited in 45.0% of Google AI Overviews answers and 27.4% of AI Mode answers, but in 0 of 1,164 ChatGPT answers. Reddit appears in only 0.9% of ChatGPT answers.
- →Google describes structured data as a standardized format for providing information about a page and classifying its content (Google Search Central), which helps machines read your facts correctly.

SEO & content, answered
Does SEO still matter for AI answers?+
Yes. Google states that the usual SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and a page must be indexed to be shown as a supporting link. GEO builds on that groundwork and adds the question of which pages AI actually cites.
How do we know which of our pages AI cites?+
Run your buyer questions across the engines and read the cited URLs in each answer. Howseen does this automatically and shows, per question and per engine, whether your pages are cited and which pages are cited instead.
What makes an article more likely to be cited?+
A direct answer near the top, facts with sources, a structure that is easy to quote, and coverage of the questions buyers actually ask. The GEO research paper found that how content is written changes how visible it is in generative engine answers.
Why connect Search Console and Bing?+
So each new article is submitted for indexing and you can check that it is indexed. An article an engine cannot find cannot be cited.
Should we write new pages or update old ones?+
Both, without duplicates. Update an existing page when it already targets the question, and write a new one only when nothing on your site answers it.
