GEO for local businesses
Be the local pro AI picks near you.
Your customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI who the best plumber, painter or clinic near them is, and whether a quote is fair. GEO for local businesses is the work of making sure the AI names you, and describes you correctly.

The shift
Customers ask an AI before they call
Before they pick up the phone, more customers type their question into an AI: who is the best electrician in town, is this renovation quote fair, which restaurant is good tonight. The AI answers with two or three names.
One tradesperson put it plainly on a call with our team: “my customers paste my quotes into ChatGPT.” The AI is now in the room when your customer decides. If it does not know you, it names someone else, or it judges your price without knowing what you include.
What customers ask
The questions that decide who gets the call
Local decisions come down to a few questions. Each one gets a short answer from the AI, and each answer either names your business or a competitor down the road.
- →"best [trade] near [town]"
- →"is this [job] quote fair"
- →"how much does [job] cost in [city]"
- →"is [your business] reliable"
Swap in your trade, your town and your main jobs, and you have the list of answers to check first.
The plays
How local businesses get recommended
AI does not visit your shop. It reads what is written about you online. These are the plays that change what it reads.
Google reviews & directories
AI answers lean on the places that already describe local businesses: your Google Business Profile, your reviews and the directories of your trade. Keep them complete and recent, with the same name, address and phone everywhere.
One clear services, area & prices page
Write one plain page that says what you do, the towns you cover and your typical price ranges. When a customer pastes a quote into ChatGPT, this is the page that lets it explain what your price includes.
Answers to local questions
Publish short articles that answer what customers really ask: how much a job costs in your area, how long it takes, what to check in a quote. Those are the pages AI quotes back.
Reviews AI can actually read
A reviews widget loaded by JavaScript is often invisible to AI crawlers. Put a few real customer reviews in plain text on your site, and check what crawlers see with our free AI crawler URL inspector.
Measure
Know if AI names you
Ask the same local questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI, and check four things: are you named, who is named instead, how you are described, and which sites the answers cite.
Those cited sites are your to-do list: a directory where you are missing, a review site where you have no reviews, a question no page on your site answers yet.
Where Howseen fits. Howseen asks your customers' questions to the AI engines every 3 days, shows who gets named instead of you, and writes the articles that answer those questions, ready to publish on your site. Check your site with the free AI score, read what GEO is, see pricing, or join the community.
The evidence
Why local businesses cannot ignore AI answers
AI answers now sit between your customer and your phone number. Fewer clicks reach your site, so being named inside the answer matters more every month.
- →When a Google AI summary appears, users click a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and click a link inside the summary in 1% of visits (Pew Research Center, 900 U.S. adults, 68,879 searches, July 2025).
- →Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: the usual SEO best practices apply and a page must be indexed to be shown as a supporting link (Google Search Central).
- →Across 5 engines, our dataset logged 41,711 source links from 5,724 distinct domains. Perplexity cites 17.4 sources per answer, ChatGPT 5.2: each engine builds its short list from a different set of sites.
“AI Overviews is going very well with over 1.5 billion users per month”
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, Q1 2025 earnings remarks, April 24, 2025

Local GEO, answered
Can a local business show up in ChatGPT answers?+
Yes. When a customer asks for the best pro in a town, AI engines build the answer from sources such as review sites, directories and business websites. A business described clearly and consistently in those places has a real chance to be named.
My customers paste my quotes into ChatGPT. What can I do?+
Make sure the AI can find what your price includes. A clear page with your services, the area you cover, your typical price ranges and what each job includes gives the AI the context to explain your quote instead of guessing.
Do Google reviews matter for AI answers?+
Reviews are one of the main ways AI learns what customers think of a local business. Recent, detailed reviews on your Google profile and in directories help, and a few reviews in plain text on your own site help AI crawlers that do not run JavaScript.
Is this different from local SEO?+
Local SEO works on your ranking in Google Maps and search results. GEO works on whether an AI answer names you. They share a lot of groundwork, such as reviews and a clear website, but they are checked separately.
I have no time for marketing. Is this for me?+
Howseen does the heavy part: it tracks the questions, finds the gaps and writes the articles. You approve and publish, or let our experts run it for you with the Done for you plan.
