GEO for Ecommerce
Get your store recommended when shoppers ask an AI what to buy.
Shoppers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity which store and product is best, and the AI hands back a short list of brands. Here is how ecommerce and Shopify stores get named on it. DTC brands selling from their own site are included: the plays are the same.

The shift
Shoppers ask an AI before they buy
More and more shopping decisions start with a question to an AI: what should I buy, which store is best, who do people trust. The AI does not send them off to browse ten tabs. It hands back a short list of brands and stores.
If your store is not one of the names on that list, you are invisible at the exact moment of choice, and you never see the sale you lost. GEO is the work of getting your store onto that short list.
What shoppers ask
The questions that decide the sale
These are the kinds of questions shoppers put to an AI. Each one hands back a short list, and each one is a place your store is either named or missing.
- ▸"best [product] for [need]"
- ▸"is [store] legit / any good"
- ▸"[brand] vs [brand]"
- ▸"where to buy [product]"
The plays
How stores get recommended
AI models lean on the sources they trust. These are the plays that get an ecommerce store named in the answer.
Clear product & category pages
Say plainly what the product is, who it is for, and why it is good. Pages a model can read at a glance are pages it can quote back to a shopper.
Reviews & UGC
Ratings, reviews and community mentions are cited heavily. When shoppers vouch for you in the places models trust, your store shows up in the answer.
Structured data & feeds
Clean product structured data and feeds help models quote details correctly: price, availability, specs. Fewer gaps means fewer reasons to name a competitor instead.
Editorial "best of" & communities
Get into the roundups, "best product for X" articles and threads that shoppers and models both rely on. Those sources feed the short lists directly.
For Shopify stores
Running on Shopify
If you run a Shopify store, the plays are the same: publish clear, cite-worthy content on your store, and keep your product data clean so models can quote details correctly.
Howseen tracks how AI engines talk about your store and helps you produce the content that closes the gaps. It is a tracking and content layer, not a storefront plugin, so it works alongside the store you already have.
Measure it
Know where you stand
Run the questions your shoppers ask across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI, and track whether your store is named, your share of voice against competitors, the sentiment around you, and which sources the answers cite.
That turns a moving surface into something you can work: you see where a competitor is named instead of you, trace the sources behind it, and know what to publish next.
Where Howseen fits. Howseen tracks how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI talk about your store, shows who gets cited instead of you, and turns each gap into content you can publish. The evidence
What the data says for online stores
Shoppers increasingly read the AI answer instead of the result list. Google's AI surfaces and ChatGPT pick sources differently, so stores need to show up in both.
- →When a Google AI summary appears, users click a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and click a link inside the summary in 1% of visits (Pew Research Center, 900 U.S. adults, 68,879 searches, July 2025).
- →In our study of 5,331 AI answers to 378 buyer questions (August 16 to October 4, 2026), YouTube is cited in 45.0% of Google AI Overviews answers and 27.4% of AI Mode answers, but in 0 of 1,164 ChatGPT answers. Reddit appears in only 0.9% of ChatGPT answers. Product videos matter for Google's AI, far less for ChatGPT.
- →Google describes structured data as a standardized format for providing information about a page and classifying its content (Google Search Central), which helps machines read your product facts correctly.
- →Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: the usual SEO best practices apply and a page must be indexed to be shown as a supporting link (Google Search Central).
“AI Overviews is going very well with over 1.5 billion users per month”

Ecommerce GEO, answered
What is GEO for ecommerce?+
GEO for ecommerce is the practice of getting your store and products recommended inside AI answers, the way SEO gets you ranked on Google. It optimizes for the sources AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity cite when a shopper asks what to buy or which store is best.
What do shoppers actually ask an AI?+
Shoppers ask an AI for the best product for a specific need, whether a store is legit or any good, how two brands compare, and where to buy a product. The AI answers with a short list of stores and brands.
Do product reviews affect AI recommendations?+
Ratings, reviews and community mentions are cited heavily by AI models when they decide which stores and products to recommend. Being described clearly and talked about in the places models trust tends to matter more than backlinks alone.
Does this work for Shopify stores?+
Yes. For a Shopify store, publish clear, cite-worthy content on your store and keep your product data clean so models can quote details correctly. Howseen tracks your store across AI engines and helps you produce that content.
How is GEO different from SEO for ecommerce?+
SEO optimizes for rankings and blue links on search engines. GEO optimizes for being named inside the AI's answer when a shopper asks what to buy. A product page can rank low on Google and still be the source ChatGPT cites, so the two are measured separately.
