Howseen Academy › Module 3: Act on your site and beyond
Howseen Academy · Lesson 3.3
Build trust: E-E-A-T, reviews and mentions elsewhere
AI answers are built from several sources. Show who you are on your own site, then get named, fairly and consistently, on the sites AI already reads.
By the end of this lesson, you can
- Show the trust signals AI and Google look for on your own site
- Choose the right off-site play for each kind of source
- Avoid the shortcuts that backfire
Why others matter
Why does what others say about you matter so much?
Because an AI answer is a summary of several sources. If review sites, lists and threads name your competitors and not you, your own site alone rarely changes the answer.
In the Pew study, 88% of Google AI summaries cited three or more sources (Pew Research Center, July 2025). In our data, five engines cited 5,724 distinct domains over 5,331 answers, and Google AI Overviews cited YouTube in 45.0% of its answers (Howseen study). Most of the pages an AI reads are not yours.
On your site
What is E-E-A-T, and how do you show it?
E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness. Google uses it to describe helpful content, and says trust matters most. Make it visible on every page.
“Of these aspects, trust is most important.”
- A real author on each guide, with a short bio and a link to an about page.
- A visible publication or update date.
- Contact details, legal pages, refund or return policy.
- Sources for every number, linked to the original.
- First-hand proof: screenshots, prices, process, customer quotes you are allowed to share.

Off-site
Which off-site plays get a brand named?
Four plays cover most cases: get added to lists, build review profiles, contribute to communities, and publish video. Pick the one that matches the sources AI cites for you.
| Source AI cites | The play | First step |
|---|---|---|
| "Best X for Y" lists | Get added to the list | Contact the author with a short, ready-to-paste description and one useful fact |
| Review and directory sites | Complete your profile, collect recent reviews | Fill every field, then ask 5 to 10 happy customers for a review |
| Forum and Reddit threads | Answer the question, openly | Give real advice first, say who you are, mention your product only where it fits |
| YouTube videos | Publish or appear in a short video | Title it as the question, answer it in the first lines of the description, add a transcript |
| Media and reference pages | Earn coverage with facts | Offer a data point or a clear expert view tied to the question |
Find which of these sources matter for you with lesson 2.3.
Consistency
Why must your facts be the same everywhere?
Because an AI compares sources. If your price, category or audience differ from one site to another, it cannot describe you with confidence, and it may pick a clearer competitor.
- Write one short description of what you do, for whom, and your main strength.
- Use the same wording on your site, your review profiles, your directory listings and your social bios.
- Fix outdated facts first: old prices, old product names, features you removed.
- Check twice a year, or after any big change in your offer.
Facts with sources travel better. In the KDD 2024 GEO paper, citing sources and adding statistics raised visibility in AI answers (Aggarwal et al., GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, KDD 2024), so give the sites that write about you numbers they can quote and link.
What not to do
Which shortcuts backfire?
Fake reviews, hidden self-promotion in communities and paid links dressed as editorial. They break platform rules, they can be removed, and they damage the trust you are trying to build.
- Never write reviews for yourself or pay for fake ones. Ask real customers.
- In communities, always say you work for the brand. Undisclosed promotion gets removed and remembered.
- Do not spray the same message on dozens of threads. One useful answer beats ten copies.
- Do not claim numbers you cannot source.
“Google's automated ranking systems are designed to prioritize helpful, reliable information that's created to benefit people, and not content that's created to manipulate search engine rankings.”
In Howseen
How does Howseen help with off-site work?
The Action Plan lists off-page actions built from the sources AI cites for your questions, with steps and a ready-to-send outreach message where it fits.
Open Action Plan, filter Action type on Off-page, and open an action. You see the domain and the questions behind it, the steps, and the sources AI cites most in your category. Step by step in lesson 4.6.
Questions, answered
Does E-E-A-T directly change my AI visibility?+
Google says E-E-A-T itself is not a specific ranking factor, but its systems use a mix of signals that identify content with good E-E-A-T. Showing trust clearly helps both people and machines.
Do I need Reddit to be recommended by AI?+
Not always. It depends on the engine and the category. In our data, Reddit appeared in only 0.9% of ChatGPT answers but in 10.4% of Google AI Overviews answers. Check your own sources first.
How do I get added to a best-of list?+
Contact the author with a short description they can paste, one useful fact or data point, and a clear reason your product fits their readers. Make it easy and honest.
How many reviews do I need?+
There is no magic number. Recent reviews on the sites AI cites for your category matter more than a large old count.
Can I post about my own product in communities?+
Only openly, saying who you are, and only where it answers the question. Give real advice first.
