New data: Google AI cites YouTube in 45% of answers. ChatGPT, never.

Howseen Academy › Module 3: Act on your site and beyond

Howseen Academy · Lesson 3.2

Write pages that AI can quote

An AI lifts sentences, not pages. Write each section so that one sentence answers the question on its own, with a fact and a source behind it.

By the end of this lesson, you can

Rule 1

Why should every section start with the answer?

Because the AI looks for a sentence it can lift. If the answer is in the first sentence under a heading, it can quote you. If it is in paragraph four, it may not.

Write each heading as the question your buyer asks. Then answer it in the first one or two sentences, in 40 to 60 words, without a warm-up. The rest of the section gives the detail, the example and the proof.

Each section should make sense on its own, without the rest of the page. Avoid as we saw above and pronouns with no clear subject: a quoted passage loses its context.

Rule 2

Should a page answer one question or many?

One main question per page, and its sub-questions as sections. AI engines break a question into several searches, so cover the sub-questions on the same page.

“Under the hood, AI Mode uses our query fan-out technique, breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf.”

If a buyer asks for the best tool for a small agency, the AI may also search price, integrations and alternatives. A page that answers those four points under four headings matches more of the searches. See the real sub-searches of a question with the AI query fan-out tool.

Rule 3

What makes a passage more likely to be cited?

Facts, quotes and sources. In the main GEO research paper, adding statistics, quotations or cited sources did best, while stuffing keywords did worse than doing nothing.

“Specifically, our top-performing methods, Cite Sources, Quotation Addition, and Statistics Addition, achieved a relative improvement of 30-40% on the Position-Adjusted Word Count metric and 15-30% on the Subjective Impression metric.”

Rule 4

Which formats are easiest for AI to reuse?

Short paragraphs, lists, comparison tables and a FAQ. They cut the page into clean pieces that an engine can lift without rewriting.

This academy is written with these rules. So are the articles Howseen writes for you (content autopilot).

Rule 5

Who should the page be written for: the AI or the buyer?

The buyer. Google's systems are built to reward helpful pages made for people, and Google says the same best practices apply to its AI features. Write for a real buyer.

“Google's automated ranking systems are designed to prioritize helpful, reliable information that's created to benefit people, and not content that's created to manipulate search engine rankings.”

Show first-hand knowledge: your prices, your process, real limits of your product, examples from your customers when you have their permission. Say who wrote the page and when it was updated (Google Search Central, Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content). More on trust in lesson 3.3.

Checklist

What should you check before you publish?

Run this ten-point check on every page. It takes five minutes and catches most of the reasons a page is read but never quoted.

  1. The title and H1 say the question or topic in the buyer's words.
  2. The first sentence under each heading answers that heading.
  3. Every section makes sense if read alone.
  4. Every number has a source, linked.
  5. There is at least one quote from a credible person or document.
  6. Options are compared in a table.
  7. There is a FAQ with real questions.
  8. Your brand is named where it truly fits, next to the alternatives, so the page reads fair.
  9. Author name and update date are visible.
  10. The page is in the HTML, indexed, and linked from related pages on your site.

Tip. Already have pages? Refreshing them is often faster than writing new ones. See Content Refresh in lesson 4.7.

Questions, answered

How long should a page be to get cited by AI?+

Long enough to answer the question and its sub-questions, no longer. A focused page with clear sections often does better than a long page that covers many topics.

Does keyword stuffing help with AI answers?+

No. In the KDD 2024 GEO paper, keyword stuffing scored 17.8 against 19.5 for no change at all, the only method that did worse.

Should I mention competitors on my own pages?+

On comparison pages, yes, fairly. Buyers compare, and AI answers compare. A page that names the alternatives honestly reads as more useful than a page that pretends they do not exist.

Can I use AI to write these pages?+

Yes, as long as a person checks every fact, adds first-hand knowledge and sources, and the page is made for buyers. Google's guidance is about helpful content, whatever the tool.

How often should I update a page?+

When facts change, and at least when your tracking shows a competitor taking your place on its question. Update the date only when you change the content.

See who AI recommends instead of you

Howseen runs your buyer questions on the AI engines every few days, shows who gets named instead of you, and writes the pages that close the gap.
