Howseen Academy › Module 4: Use Howseen step by step
Howseen Academy · Lesson 4.6
Work your Action Plan
The Action Plan turns your gaps into a ranked list of moves, each with its reason, its steps and its expected impact. Here is how to run it week after week.
By the end of this lesson, you can
- Read the GEO score and its three levers
- Open an action and understand why it is there
- Move actions through your board and close them
The score
What is the GEO score at the top of the Action Plan?
A score out of 100 built from three levers you can each push to 100: Technical, Content and Off-page. Every action you complete earns points.
- GEO score: your global score out of 100, with a level.
- Three bars: Technical (can AI read your site), Content (do you have pages that answer your buyer questions), Off-page (are you named on the sites AI reads).
- On the right: points earned out of the total, and the number of high-priority left.
Getting actions
Where do the actions come from?
From your tracking. Howseen reads your answers, the sources they cite and your audit, and turns each gap into an action. Click Generate recommendations to refresh them.
- Open Action Plan in the left menu, under Optimize.
- Click Generate recommendations at the top right after a new check or a big change.
- Switch between Board and List. Filter by Severity, Assignee or Action type.
| Type | Typical action | Where it leads |
|---|---|---|
| Content | Publish a page answering a question where AI recommends a competitor | Write it opens the Content Plan on that question |
| Technical | Fix a blocker found by the audit, like AI crawlers blocked | Open audit opens the Technical Audit |
| Off-page | Get listed, reviewed or quoted on a site AI cites | Steps and, where it fits, a ready outreach message |
One action
What is inside an action?
The title says what to do. Inside you find the priority, the effort, the points, the expected impact, the signals behind it and the steps, in order.
- Priority (High, Medium, Low), type, on-page or off-page, the engines it was tracked on.
- Effort: Low effort about 1 day, Medium effort about 2 to 3 days, High effort ongoing.
- Expected impact: how many questions it can move you into, and the points it unlocks.
- Signals: the facts behind it, for example a domain cited on several questions where you are absent, or real Google demand.
- Steps, Internal notes for your team, and the Sources AI cites most in your category.
Some actions carry a Google-confirmed badge: they come from your Search Console data, for example a page sitting on page 2 of Google for a query you could win (lesson 4.2). Their last step is often to request indexing again in Search Console (Search Console Help, URL Inspection tool).
Moving it
How do you move an action to done?
Use the buttons at the top of the action: To-do, In Progress, Complete. Archive the ones that do not fit. Your board and your score update.
- Open an action, then click To-do to plan it.
- When someone starts, click In Progress. If your account has team seats, assign it from the board.
- When it is done, click Complete. The points go to your GEO score.
- Not relevant? Click Archive. Need to share it? Click Export.
- Use the tabs Suggested, To-do, In Progress, Completed and Archive to see each column.
Routine
What weekly routine works best?
One hour a week is enough to start: pick three actions, ship them, and check what moved at the next runs. Consistency beats one big push.
- Monday: open the Overview, then the Action Plan. Move three high priority actions to To-do, at least one Content and one Off-page.
- During the week: ship them. For Content, generate and publish the page; for Off-page, send the outreach.
- Friday: mark them Complete, write a note on what you did, and click Generate recommendations after your next check.
This rhythm is our suggestion, not a rule. The principle behind it comes from the research: pages that add facts, quotes and sources gain visibility in AI answers (Aggarwal et al., GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, KDD 2024), and Google rewards helpful content made for people (Google Search Central, Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content). Small, regular improvements add up.
“Google's automated ranking systems are designed to prioritize helpful, reliable information that's created to benefit people, and not content that's created to manipulate search engine rankings.”
Questions, answered
How is the GEO score calculated?+
It combines three levers, Technical, Content and Off-page, each out of 100. Each action carries points; completing it adds them to your score.
Why did an action appear again after I archived it?+
If the gap is still there at the next check, a similar action can be suggested again. Archive it for good only if it really does not apply to you.
Can I assign actions to my team?+
The board has an Assignee filter for accounts with team seats. If Team Members still shows Soon in your Settings, use Internal notes and Export to share actions with your team.
What does Google-confirmed mean?+
The action is backed by your own Search Console data, for example real impressions on a query. Connect Search Console to get these.
Which action should I do first?+
A high priority Content action on a question with buying intent. It is the fastest way to appear in an answer you lose today.
