Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: how to get your brand cited.
To appear in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Google asks for nothing more. What decides who is cited is whether your page answers the sub-questions Google runs, and whether trusted sites name you.

What are AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews is the AI summary Google shows above the results for some searches. AI Mode is a separate tab where people ask longer questions and follow up. Both cite a handful of web pages as supporting links.
Google runs both on the same idea, which it calls query fan-out: instead of one search, the model issues multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, then writes an answer from what it found (Google Search Central). A single buyer question becomes ten smaller ones, and each one is a chance for a different page to be cited.
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it shows | Above the classic results, on some searches | A dedicated tab next to Images, News and Videos |
| How people use it | One question, a short summary | Long questions and follow ups in the same thread |
| How Google builds it | Query fan-out, then a summary with supporting links | Query fan-out on more sub-questions, then a longer answer with links |
| What it takes to be cited | Indexed, eligible for a snippet, answers the sub-question | Same, with more room for niche and comparison pages |
| Where you see it | Search Console Web traffic, not split out | Search Console Web traffic, not split out |

The guide in 2 minutes
To be cited in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet: Google asks for nothing more. What decides who is cited is whether your page answers the sub-questions Google runs, and whether trusted sites name you.
How Google picks sources
How does Google choose the pages it cites?
Google only cites pages it has indexed and may show with a snippet. Among those, it picks the pages that answer each sub-question best, which is why a page outside the top results can still be cited.
“There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”
In practice, this means the work is the work of a good page, done on the right questions. Google lists the basics: let Googlebot crawl the page, link to it internally, keep the important content in text, offer a good page experience, and keep structured data in line with what is visible. For local and retail brands, it also names an up to date Business Profile and Merchant Center feed (Google Search Central).
What Google does not say is which brands it will name. That part comes from the sources it reads: reviews, comparisons, forums and editorial pages. Our own guide on how AI chooses brands covers those signals in detail.
The playbook
How do you rank in AI Overviews?
There is no ranking trick. You get cited by answering the exact questions buyers ask, in pages Google can read, and by being named on the third-party sites Google trusts for your topic.
List the questions buyers ask
Write down 20 to 50 questions a buyer asks before choosing a product like yours, in their words, not your keywords. These are the searches that trigger AI answers.
Find the sub-questions
For each question, look at the searches the AI runs behind it. Our free query fan-out tool shows them, and they are the outline of the page you need.
Answer first, then explain
Open each section with a direct two-sentence answer, then the detail. Add the figures and sources a reader would want: the GEO research found that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources were among the most effective changes.
Check that Google can read it
The page must be indexed and allowed to show a snippet. Check robots.txt, noindex tags and the URL Inspection tool in Search Console, and test your AI crawlers with our AI crawler checker.
Get named where Google looks
Look at the pages Google cites on your questions. If they are review sites, lists or forums, being mentioned there is what moves the answer, more than another page on your own site.
Measure the answers, not only the clicks
Run the same questions every week and note who is named. The next section explains what to track.
Traffic
What changes for your traffic?
Fewer people click when an AI summary appears, so being named inside the answer matters more than ranking below it. The clicks that remain tend to be better, according to Google.
- →When a Google AI summary appears, users click a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and click a link inside the summary in 1% of visits (Pew Research Center, 68,879 searches by 900 U.S. adults, July 2025).
- →Google says that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, meaning users are more likely to spend more time on the site (Google Search Central).
- →AI Mode passed one billion monthly active users one year after launch, according to Google in May 2026 (Google France blog).
- →An AI Mode search is on average three times longer than a traditional search, and AI Overviews and AI Mode launched in France on July 22, 2026 (Google France blog).
Longer questions mean more specific answers: a buyer no longer types two words, they describe their situation. The brands named in those answers are the ones whose pages, reviews and mentions match that situation.
Measurement
What should you measure?
Measure three things every week: whether your brand is named in the AI answer, which competitor is named instead, and which pages Google cites as sources. Search Console alone cannot tell you any of them. The free AI visibility checker gives a first snapshot, and the AI Overviews tracker follows all three over time.
Search Console counts clicks and impressions from AI features inside the overall Web traffic, without a separate line. It tells you that you got traffic, not whether Google recommended you or a competitor in the answer.
- →Presence: on how many of your buyer questions the answer names your brand.
- →Share of voice: how often you are named compared with each competitor, on the same questions.
- →Sources: the pages cited as supporting links, yours and other sites, which become your target list.
- →Change over time: AI answers move from one week to the next, so a single check says little.
Howseen runs these checks for you on Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, alongside ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and turns each lost question into a page to write. See AI engine tracking, what an AI visibility tool should track, or the pricing.
Google AI Overviews, answered
Short answers to the questions people ask most about this topic, each one based on the sources cited on this page.
How do I get my site into Google AI Overviews?+
Make sure the page is indexed and eligible to show a snippet, then answer the question and its sub-questions clearly in text. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Is Google AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?+
No. AI Overviews is a summary shown above the results for some searches. AI Mode is a separate tab where you hold a full conversation with Google. Both use query fan-out and both cite web pages as supporting links.
Do I need schema markup or an llms.txt file for AI Overviews?+
No. Google states you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files or markup to appear. Structured data still helps Google understand a page, as long as it matches the visible content.
Can I see AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?+
Partly. Google includes clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the overall Web search traffic of the Performance report, but does not split them out. To know whether you are named in the answer, you have to check the answers themselves.
Can I keep my content out of AI Overviews?+
Yes, with the same controls as regular snippets: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. Blocking Google-Extended concerns training of other Google AI systems, not AI Overviews in Search.
Are AI Overviews and AI Mode available in France and Europe?+
Yes. Google launched AI Overviews and AI Mode in France on July 22, 2026. AI Mode works in French, so French buyers now get AI answers in Google too.
