GEO vs SEO: what actually changes.
SEO earns a ranked link on Google. GEO earns a mention inside the AI's answer. Both rest on crawlable, useful pages, but GEO is won on third-party sources and measured by citations, not positions.

Side by side
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO optimises pages to rank in a list of links that the buyer compares. GEO optimises for being named in the answer an AI writes, where the AI compares for the buyer and hands back a short list.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in Google's results | Be named or cited in the AI's answer |
| Where you win | Google and Bing results pages | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Unit of success | Position, impressions, clicks | Mention, citation, share of voice, sentiment |
| What the engine reads | Your page, its links and its signals | Several searches per question, then the pages that answer each one |
| Biggest lever | Content and backlinks to your pages | Content plus mentions on the third-party sites the AI cites |
| What hurts | Thin pages, technical errors | Vague pages, keyword stuffing, absence from cited sources |
| How you measure it | Search Console, rank tracking | Running buyer questions on each AI engine, over time |

GEO vs SEO in 2 minutes
SEO earns a ranked link on Google. GEO earns a mention inside the AI's answer. Both rest on crawlable, useful pages, but GEO is won on third-party sources and measured by citations, not positions. GEO does not replace SEO: it sits on top of it.
Common ground
What stays the same between GEO and SEO?
The foundations do not change. An AI search engine can only cite a page it can crawl, and Google's AI features only use pages that are indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
“There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”
So the SEO basics carry over: pages that load, clear titles, internal links, text that answers the question, structured data that matches the page. Our guide to Google AI Overviews and AI Mode lists what Google asks for, and what it does not.
What changes
What is different in GEO?
Three things change: the AI breaks one question into many searches, it cites a different mix of sites than Google ranks, and the classic keyword tactics stop working. Each one changes where you spend your time.
- →One question, many searches. Google describes query fan-out as issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources (Google Search Central). Covering the five or six sub-questions behind a buyer question beats ranking first on one keyword.
- →A different set of sources. Across 5 engines, our dataset logged 41,711 source links from 5,724 distinct domains. Perplexity cites 17.4 sources per answer, ChatGPT 5.2, so each engine needs its own check.
- →Keyword stuffing fails. In the GEO research, keyword stuffing performed 10% worse than the baseline on Perplexity, while adding statistics, quotations and cited sources were the most effective methods (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024).
- →Fewer clicks, so the mention matters. When a Google AI summary appears, users click a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one (Pew Research Center, July 2025).
“While widely used for Search Engine Optimization, we find such methods offer little to no improvement on generative engine's responses.”

Vocabulary
Is answer engine optimization the same as GEO?
Yes, for practical purposes. Answer engine optimization (AEO), generative engine optimization (GEO), LLM SEO and AI SEO name the same goal: being the answer, or named in it, when someone asks an AI.
The term GEO was popularised by the research paper of Aggarwal and colleagues, published at KDD 2024, which measured that GEO methods can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses (arXiv 2311.09735). AEO is the older name, long associated with featured snippets and voice assistants. Whatever the name, the work is the one described on this page and in our guide to GEO.

Where to start
Does GEO replace SEO, and where do you start?
GEO does not replace SEO, it sits on top of it. Keep your SEO basics, then add the GEO layer: buyer questions, the sources AI cites for them, and mentions on those sources. Measure first with the free AI visibility checker, or hand both layers to our GEO services.
Keep the SEO foundations
Crawlable, indexed pages, clear structure, a sitemap and a robots.txt that lets the AI crawlers in. Check them with our AI crawler checker. An llms.txt file is optional hygiene, not a lever.
Track buyer questions on AI
List the questions buyers ask an AI before choosing, and check who is named on each engine. That is your GEO baseline.
Read the sources behind each answer
The pages cited on a lost question are your target list: some are yours to write, others are sites where you need a mention.
Write the missing pages
Answer first, then explain, with figures and sources. One page per real question, not per keyword variant.
Measure every week
AI answers move often. Compare the AI visibility tools, or let Howseen run the checks and write the pages, from pricing.

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?+
SEO works to rank your pages in Google's list of links. GEO works to get your brand named inside the answer of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI. SEO is measured in positions and clicks, GEO in mentions, citations and share of voice.
Is GEO replacing SEO?+
No. AI search engines still read indexed, crawlable pages, so SEO remains the foundation. GEO adds a second layer: the questions buyers ask AI, the sources AI cites, and being named on third-party sites.
Is answer engine optimization (AEO) the same as GEO?+
In practice, yes. Answer engine optimization, generative engine optimization, LLM SEO and AI SEO all describe the same work: being the answer, or named in it, when people ask an AI. GEO is the term used by the research paper that measured it.
Does keyword stuffing work for GEO?+
No. The GEO research found that keyword stuffing offered little to no improvement in generative engine responses, and performed 10% worse than the baseline on Perplexity. Statistics, quotations and cited sources worked best.
Can a page rank low on Google and still be cited by AI?+
Yes. AI engines run several searches per question and pick the page that answers each sub-question best, so a page outside the top results can be the one cited. Being indexed is still required for Google's AI features.
Where should a small team start?+
Check which buyer questions name a competitor instead of you, look at the sources those answers cite, then write the missing page and get mentioned on the sites the AI reads. Keep your existing SEO basics in place.
