AI Overviews tracker: see if Google’s AI names your brand.
Howseen runs your buyer questions in Google AI Overviews and in AI Mode, as two separate engines, every 3 days (daily on Business). Each run records whether your brand is named, who is named instead, and which pages Google cites.

Short answer
What does the AI Overviews tracker record?
For every buyer question you track and every run, Howseen keeps the full Google AI answer and reads four things in it: whether your brand is named, which brands are named instead, which pages are cited, and when.
- →The answer itself: the text of the AI Overview, and of the AI Mode answer on Pro and Business, kept for every run so you can reread what Google said.
- →Your brand: named or not, question by question, so you know exactly where you are missing.
- →Who is named instead: the brands Google’s AI recommends in your place, with your share of voice against each tracked competitor.
- →The cited pages: the URL, title and domain of every supporting link, so you see which sites Google trusted for that answer.
- →Country and language: each question is searched in the market you sell to, so the answer is the one your buyers see.
The same questions run on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity too, so you can compare engines side by side on the AI engine tracking page.
Method
How do we measure it?
We search each question on Google like a buyer would, wait for the AI Overview to load in full, then parse the answer and its links. AI Mode is queried in its own tab. Nothing is estimated: every number comes from a stored answer.
“There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”
Google Search Central, AI features and your website
That is why tracking matters: Google gives no list of who it cites, and Search Console counts AI features inside overall Web traffic without a separate line (Google Search Central). The only way to know whether the AI Overview names you is to read it, on the questions your buyers ask, run after run.
It matters for traffic too. When a Google AI summary appears, users click a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one (Pew Research Center, July 2025).
Our data
What do AI Overviews and AI Mode cite?
In 30 days of tracking, the two Google surfaces cited different sets of pages: AI Overviews cited more links per answer and leaned on YouTube more than twice as often as AI Mode.
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Answers recorded | 11,572 on 4,025 questions | 10,741 on 3,552 questions |
| Cited links per answer | 4.0 on average | 3.3 on average |
| Answers citing YouTube | 21.8% (2,398 of 11,020) | 9.2% (881 of 9,616) |
| Answers citing Reddit | 8.7% (957 of 11,020) | 7.2% (696 of 9,616) |
| Answers naming the tracked brand | 6.5% | 5.8% |
Two lessons for a brand. First, track the two surfaces separately: a page cited in one is not automatically cited in the other. Second, the tracked brand is named in a small share of answers on its own buyer questions, which is the gap tracking is there to close. Then what
What do you do with the results?
Each question where Google’s AI names a competitor and not you becomes an action: a page to write or improve on your site, or a cited site to get listed on.
- →Write the answer: Howseen turns the gap into an article written for that question and publishes it to your site, see content autopilot.
- →Get on the cited pages: the sources list shows the reviews, lists and forums Google trusted, see competitors and sources.
- →Follow the playbook: our guide on how to get cited in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode covers what Google asks for and what changes the answer.
- →Start with a free check: the AI visibility checker gives a one-time snapshot before you track anything.
AI Overviews tracking, answered
Short answers to the questions people ask before they track their brand in Google’s AI.
What is an AI Overviews tracker?+
A tool that runs your buyer questions in Google, reads the AI Overview at the top of the results and records, on each run, whether your brand is named, which brands are named instead and which pages Google cites as supporting links. Howseen does the same for Google AI Mode, as a separate engine.
Does Howseen track Google AI Mode as well as AI Overviews?+
Yes. AI Overviews is tracked on every plan, from Starter at €39 per month. AI Mode is added on Pro (€79 per month) and Business. The two are tracked as two separate engines, because Google says they may use different models and show different links.
How often are AI Overviews checked?+
Every 3 days on Starter and Pro, and every day on Business. Each run keeps the full answer, so you see when your brand enters or drops out of the AI Overview for a question.
Can I track AI Overviews in another country or language?+
Yes. Each question is searched with the country and language of your market, so you see the AI Overview your buyers see. Pro and Business can track the same questions in a second country.
Can Search Console show my AI Overviews visibility?+
Not on its own. Google counts clicks and impressions from AI features inside the overall Web search traffic in Search Console, without a separate line, so it cannot tell you whether the AI Overview named you or a competitor.
Is there a free trial?+
Yes, a 3-day free trial, cancel in 1 click. You can also run the free AI visibility checker first, with no signup, for a one-time snapshot.
