Howseen Academy › Module 1: Understand GEO
Howseen Academy · Lesson 1.3
Mention, citation, ranking: three ways to show up
An AI answer can name your brand, link to your page, or do neither. Here is what each one means, how it differs from ranking on Google, and which one to watch first.
By the end of this lesson, you can
- Tell a mention from a citation in any AI answer
- Explain why ranking on Google is not the same as being named by AI
- Pick the number to watch first for your brand
Definition
What is a mention in an AI answer?
A mention is your brand name written inside the text of the answer. It is what the buyer reads, so it is the result that matters most for sales.
Picture a buyer who asks ChatGPT: which accounting software should a 5-person agency use? The answer names three or four products. If your product is one of them, that is a mention. If it is not, the buyer never hears about you, and you never see the lost deal.
Two details make a mention worth more or less. The first is the position: being named first is not the same as being named fourth. The second is the tone, what the AI says about you: recommended, neutral, or with a warning. You will learn to read both in lesson 2.2.

What is a citation, or source?
A citation is a link to a web page that the AI shows next to its answer. It tells you which pages the AI read before writing it.
Most AI engines that search the web show their sources. They do it very differently, as our own data shows: ChatGPT attached at least one source to 97.8% of its answers, Gemini to 60.1%, and Perplexity to all of them, with 17.4 links per answer on average.
| Engine | Answers | With 1+ source | Links per answer | Cites YouTube | Cites Reddit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 1,164 | 97.8% | 5.2 | 0.0% | 0.9% |
| Gemini | 1,106 | 60.1% | 5.6 | 1.0% | 4.8% |
| Perplexity | 1,098 | 100% | 17.4 | 0.5% | 4.9% |
| Google AI Overviews | 867 | 89.3% | 7.3 | 45.0% | 10.4% |
| Google AI Mode | 1,096 | 80.9% | 3.7 | 27.4% | 4.9% |
Source: Howseen study of 5,331 AI answers to 378 buyer questions. A citation and a mention are independent. Your page can be cited while a competitor is the one recommended, and a competitor can be recommended because of a review page you never wrote.
Mention vs citation
Mention or citation: which one should you track?
Track both, for different reasons. The mention is the outcome you want. The citation is the lever: it shows the pages you must appear in to get that outcome.
| Mention | Citation | Google ranking | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Your name in the answer text | A link to a page the AI read | Your page in the list of blue links |
| Who sees it | Every person who reads the answer | People who check the sources | People who scroll the results |
| What it tells you | Whether AI recommends you | Which pages shape the answer | Whether Google finds your page relevant |
| How you move it | Be named in the sources AI reads | Publish pages AI can quote, get listed on cited sites | Classic SEO |
Start with mentions on unbranded buyer questions (questions that do not contain your brand name). Then open the citations behind each answer where a competitor is named instead of you: they are your to-do list.
GEO vs SEO
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO works to rank a page in a list of links. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) works to get your brand named inside the answer itself. SEO basics stay the floor.
“There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”
Google says the usual SEO best practices apply to its AI features, and that a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link (Google Search Central, AI features and your website). So SEO is not dead: a page Google cannot find cannot be quoted.
What changes is the prize. When a Google AI summary appears, people click a classic result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and click a link inside the summary in 1% of visits (Pew Research Center, 900 U.S. adults, July 2025). About 18% of the Google searches in that study showed an AI summary, and 88% of those summaries cited three or more sources. When the answer is on the screen, being named in it is what is left.
How the search is done changes too. One question becomes many searches, so ranking for one keyword is not enough:
“Under the hood, AI Mode uses our query fan-out technique, breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf.”
Read the full comparison in What is GEO?, and the mechanism behind the pick in How AI chooses brands.
What it changes
What should you do with this today?
Write down five questions your buyers ask before they buy, ask them to ChatGPT, and note who is named and which pages are cited. That is your first GEO audit.
- Write five questions a buyer asks before choosing a product like yours. Do not include your brand name.
- Ask each one to ChatGPT and to Google (look at the AI summary at the top).
- Note for each answer: is your brand named? Which competitors are named? Which pages are cited as sources?
- Keep this sheet. In lesson 2.1 you will turn it into a proper list of buyer questions, and Howseen can track it for you.
Tip. The free AI visibility checker runs a first check for you, and the AI query fan-out tool shows the searches ChatGPT ran behind one answer.
Questions, answered
Is a citation better than a mention?+
No, they do different jobs. A mention is what the buyer reads, so it is the result. A citation shows the page the AI read, so it tells you where to act. Track mentions first, then use citations to decide what to fix.
Can my site be cited without my brand being recommended?+
Yes. An AI can quote a fact from your page and still recommend a competitor. That is why Howseen shows mentions and sources separately for every question.
Does SEO still matter for AI answers?+
Yes. Google says pages must be indexed to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and the usual SEO best practices apply. SEO gets your pages found. GEO makes sure they get your brand named.
Do backlinks count in GEO?+
Links still help search engines find and trust your pages, which AI search then reads. But an answer names brands, not links, so the direct goal is to be named, with the right description, in the sources the AI reads.
Which AI engines show citations?+
Most engines that search the web do. In our data of 5,331 answers, Perplexity showed sources on every answer, ChatGPT on 97.8% and Gemini on 60.1%.
