See who AI recommends instead of you, and why
When AI names a competitor, it is reading someone's pages. Howseen shows which brands win each buyer question and which sources AI cites to pick them.

Definition
What is AI citation tracking?
AI citation tracking records which websites an AI answer relies on, and which brands it names, so you know who wins each buyer question and which pages put them there.
An AI answer has two layers. The brands it names: that is the recommendation your buyer reads. And the sources it cites: the pages AI read to build that recommendation. Tracking only the first tells you that you lose. Tracking both tells you where to act: the review site, the comparison article, the video or your own page that AI trusts.
For the mechanics behind the pick, read how AI chooses which brands to recommend and why AI recommends your competitors.
Competitors
Which competitors AI names for your buyers' questions
Howseen analyses every answer for every brand it names, then ranks you against your tracked competitors on visibility, share of voice, sentiment and position.
- Brand comparison: you against 3 to 5 competitors, with the change over the period.
- Top brands by AI mentions: every brand AI names in your category, including the ones you did not list.
- Brand by engine heatmap: a competitor can lead on one engine and be absent from another.
- Question by question: on each buyer question, who is named first, and which question you should win next.

Sources
Which sources each AI engine trusts: our data
In 5,331 AI answers, Google AI Overviews cited YouTube in 45.0% of answers while ChatGPT never did: each engine trusts its own sources, so you need them per engine.

Perplexity cites the most: 17.4 sources per answer, over three times ChatGPT's 5.2. ChatGPT leans on websites (brand sites, product documentation, expert and editor sites), while Google's AI surfaces lean on YouTube and social platforms. Reddit appears in only 0.9% of ChatGPT answers. Full method and limits in the study: who AI engines cite. Google confirms its AI features pull a wider and more diverse set of supporting pages than a classic search (Google Search Central, AI features and your website).
In Howseen, the sources view shows this for your buyer questions: the top cited domains, their content type (video, forum, article) and domain type, their share of citations and whether your own site is among them.

From data to action
From sources to a plan: where to get mentioned
Once you know which pages AI cites, the plan writes itself: be present on those sources and publish the page that answers the exact question on your own site.
- Off-page: the action plan lists the domains AI cites in your category (review sites, forums, comparison articles, media, video) and what to do on each.
- On-page: the content autopilot writes the article that answers the question you lose, with sources and data AI can quote.
- Technical: an audit checks that AI crawlers can read your site. OpenAI, for example, uses separate crawlers for search and for training (OpenAI, Overview of OpenAI crawlers); test yours with the free AI crawler checker.
Research supports working on what gets quoted. The GEO paper from Princeton and partners measured it:
“GEO can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses.”
Questions, answered
Why does AI recommend my competitors instead of me?+
Usually because the sources AI reads mention them and not you: review sites, comparison articles, forums, videos or a page that answers the exact question. Howseen shows which sources are cited for your buyer questions so you can close that gap. More in why AI recommends your competitors.
Which sources does ChatGPT cite?+
In our data, ChatGPT added sources to 97.8% of its answers and leaned on websites: brand sites, product documentation and expert or editor sites. It cited YouTube in 0 of 1,164 answers and Reddit in 0.9%. See the full study.
Which sources does Google AI Overviews cite?+
In our data, YouTube first, by far: 390 of 867 AI Overviews answers (45.0%), ahead of facebook.com, linkedin.com, reddit.com and instagram.com. Google AI Mode cited YouTube in 27.4% of its answers.
How many competitors can I track?+
3 per brand on Starter, 5 on Pro and Business. Howseen also lists every other brand AI names in your answers, so you spot new competitors.
What is share of voice in AI search?+
Your brand's mentions as a share of all brand mentions in the same AI answers. If AI names five brands and you are one of them in every answer, you hold about a fifth of the voice; position and repetition change the picture.
Can I export the sources?+
Yes. The sources table can be exported, and the same data is available through the Howseen API and MCP server.
